Irene Dalis Portrait

This portrait of Opera San Jose founder Irene Dalis in the Market Street lobby was painted to mark the occasion of her first performance in an opera. She is pictured as Princess Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlo, her professional debut role. The painting was made from a photo taken at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater in 1953; Robert C. Rishell, who also painted the official portrait of Governor Ronald Reagan, painted the portrait that same year. This is the second time that this portrait of Irene Dalis has been in the California Theatre: it appeared in 2016 on the set of Opera San Jose's Barber of Seville.
